ROMULUS: shaping a Circular Future with Upcyclea in London

At Upcyclea, we are proud to announce our partnership in ROMULUS, a groundbreaking initiative designed to redefine the built environment in the heart of London. In collaboration with the City of London Corporation and Maconda, ROMULUS is setting a global benchmark for circular innovation and sustainable urban development.

Why ROMULUS matters

The built environment is the largest contributor to carbon emissions in London’s Square Mile, accounting for an astounding 71% of total emissions. ROMULUS directly addresses this challenge by transforming how construction materials are used, reclaimed, and repurposed.

This initiative is not just about reducing waste—it’s about creating a resilient and future-proof city where materials are continuously upcycled. By doing so, ROMULUS aims to drastically cut emissions while fostering sustainable growth.

How ROMULUS works

Central to ROMULUS is the concept of material passports, which ensure traceability and circularity throughout the construction lifecycle. These passports provide:

  • Detailed mapping of material flows.
  • Optimization for resource reuse across multiple building lifecycles.
  • Transparency that empowers stakeholders to design buildings for longevity, adaptability, and multiple lifetimes.

With ROMULUS, construction practices shift from linear to truly circular, setting the stage for a more sustainable future.

A historic milestone in circular construction

By participating in ROMULUS, the City of London is leading the charge as the first local authority to gain actionable circular insights from live building projects. This initiative sends a powerful message to investors and industry leaders:

  • Circularity is the future of urban development.
  • Sustainable growth is both achievable and essential for meeting Net Zero targets.

As Shravan Joshi MBE, Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transportation Committee, aptly states:

“Initiatives like Romulus are vital in signaling to investors that we are committed to meeting our Net Zero goals, through sustainable growth in construction within the City.”
