Founded in 2016, Upcyclea is the global leader in AI-powered circular construction — the company that created the Digital Product Passport for buildings and has been deploying it at scale across Europe and Asia-Pacific for a decade.

OUR STORY

2016

We didn't follow the circular economy.
We created it — for buildings.

In 2015, long before embodied carbon became a regulatory requirement, the founders of Upcyclea and the European BAMB research programme invented the concept of the Digital Product Passport (Material Passport at that time) — and with it, the idea that buildings could be managed as material banks rather than demolished as waste.

Inspired by the Cradle to Cradle philosophy, we built the first AI-powered platform capable of turning a building's material inventory into real-time ESG indicators, reuse matching, and Scope 3 carbon calculation — all in one click, in real-time.

Today, Upcyclea operates urban mining programmes in France, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Japan, and manages the world's largest library of Digital Product Passports for construction products. We are recommended by the UK Green Building Council and compatible with every major decarbonisation framework, from BCA Green Mark to European CSRD.

2015

The Digital Product Passport is born

Upcyclea co-invents the Material Passport concept within the EU BAMB programme — the precursor to today's Digital Product Passport standard.

2018

First Upcyclea deployments

The platform launches commercially with social housing operators in France, achieving 96% material recovery rates within the first years.

2021

20,000 Digital Product Passports

The DPP library reaches 20,000 verified passports from partner manufacturers — the largest construction ESG database in the world.

2023

PIRÉE — France's first urban mining · UKGBC Recommendation

Upcyclea launches the first institutional urban mining programme in France with USH, and is formally recommended by the UK Green Building Council

2024

ROMULUS — City of London urban mining

Partnership with Maconda launches ROMULUS in London.

2025

EXPO 2025 — Osaka urban mining

Upcyclea powers the post-Expo material recovery programme in Osaka with Obayashi.

2026

EXPO 2025 — Osaka urban mining

Upcyclea establishes its Singapore office and launches SUM, the Singapore Urban Mining.

PLATFORM FEATURES

The principles that drive everything we build.

01 - MISSION

A world without waste is possible. And necessary.

We believe that a built environment inspired by nature — where every material has a next life and the notion of waste does not exist — is not a utopia. It is an engineering challenge. One we have been solving since 2016.

02 - APPROACH

Data is the foundation of decarbonisation;

You cannot manage what you cannot measure. Upcyclea was built on the conviction that giving every construction product a verified digital identity — its ESG passport — is the prerequisite for any credible circular economy strategy.

03 - SCALE

Individual buildings matter. Portfolios change the world.

Circular construction only achieves its carbon potential at scale. That is why Upcyclea is built to work across portfolios, institutions and entire cities — connecting asset owners, contractors, manufacturers and regulators in a single shared platform.

"At Upcyclea, we are convinced that the future of construction rests on regenerative solutions. Ten years ago we invented the Digital Product Passport. Today we operate urban mines on three continents. Our mission has never changed: to build a world of infinite resources, together."

WHAT GUIDES US

Our values in action.

Rigour before rhetoric

Every ESG indicator we produce is methodology-backed and traceable to source data. We do not publish numbers we cannot defend. Verified impact is the only impact that matters.

Collective intelligence,
not competition

Urban mining only works when stakeholders share data and trust. We build platforms that make collaboration the path of least resistance — and create shared value that no single actor could achieve alone.

Regenerative, not just sustainable

Sustainability means doing less damage. We aim higher. Every reuse operation we facilitate puts carbon back in the positive column. Every circular building we help design leaves resources in better condition than it found them to Cradle and SGBP certificates.

Speed without shortcuts

The built environment does not have a decade to wait. We have invested ten years in building the data infrastructure and AI tools so that our clients can generate Scope 3 reports, match reuse deposits and configure Green Mark submissions in minutes, not months.

Global platform, local expertise

Circular economy regulations, building codes and market structures differ from Paris to London to Singapore to Osaka. We hire local teams and configure our platform to each market — so that global ambition meets local execution.

Open ecosystem, not a walled garden

We make our DPP library free to access. We build API-first integrations. We partner with UKGBC, SGBC, BCA and the City of London. We believe the circular economy grows faster when data flows freely and standards are shared.
