What is a Digital
Product Passport?
Did you know? The concept of the Digital Product Passport — then called the Material Passport — was invented by Upcyclea’s founders within the European BAMB research programme in 2015. We have been building this infrastructure for a decade.
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a unique digital file associated with each construction product — accessible via QR code or NFC/RFID chip — containing verified, standardised ESG information across its full lifecycle.
It is a key instrument of the European ESPR regulation on sustainable product eco-design (June 2024), and the cornerstone of circular construction, embodied carbon calculation and reuse at scale.

Together with hundreds of partner manufacturers, Upcyclea offers the world’s largest library of Digital Product Passports for construction — covering structure, facades, interiors, MEP and finishes.
The library also contains nearly 2,000 generic passports created by Upcyclea based on official EPD default environmental data — ensuring coverage even where manufacturer-declared data is not yet available.
Manufacturers can declare their passports free of charge. Upcyclea verifies conformity against documentation provided. Compliant passports receive verified pictograms to help users make informed selections.
