List of products not eligible for certification

  1. Products that are contrary to the intent of the Cradle to Cradle principles, including:
    1. Weapons or other items intended to harm, kill, injure or incapacitate living things (e.g., firearms, tasers, mace, barbed wire, electric fences),
    2. Tobacco and other products intended or used for smoking or vaping (e.g. pipes),
    3. Products used exclusively to produce non-renewable fuel or electricity (nuclear reactor equipment, fracking fluid), oil drilling rigs, etc,
    4. Products that consume nuclear or non-renewable fuel (e.g., a gasoline-powered car; this does not apply to electricity purchased from the grid or plug-in products),
    5. Products containing materials from threatened, vulnerable or endangered species (e.g., African mahogany (Khaya spp.), Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), Rhodesian teak (Baikiaea plurijuga); see the Definitions section via the link to the right for the definition of threatened, vulnerable and endangered species)
    6. Products containing :
      1. Materials and substances derived from vertebrates, and invertebrates where there is clear evidence of sensitivity (e.g., cephalopods), that are killed primarily or solely for their hides, skins, feathers, or other fibers and parts (e.g., snake, crocodile, alligator, lizard, and shagreen/shagreen skins),
      2. The down, feathers or hair of any feathered living animal (e.g., ducks, geese) and substances derived from these materials,
      3. Fur, including where the fur is shorn or otherwise removed from the skin or leather (e.g., fox, mink, beaver, ermine, and rabbit, including angora rabbit fur/wool).
    7. Products that are chemicals or raw materials that cannot be optimized (e.g., monomers that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, and/or toxic to reproduction (CMR),
    8. Products whose core functionality is inherently linked to toxic active ingredients, thereby rendering the product non-optimizable (e.g., herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, and antimicrobial products with x-rated antimicrobial agents) or textiles/devices with such products intentionally added,
    9. Disinfectants (including those used for human hygiene) containing active ingredients/substances that are not approved for use by applicable regulations. These may be disinfectants containing substances that are not permitted for use in the product type concerned by the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (e.g. antimicrobial cleaners, soaps, hand sanitizers or hand rubs containing triclosan or triclocarban),
    10. Products that are designed/intended to be non-circular or promote non-circularity:
      1. The following single-use plastic products: cotton swabs/sticks, cutlery (forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks), plates, straws, beverage stirrers, balloon sticks, expanded polystyrene food and beverage containers (including beverage cups), bags < 50 microns (e.g., grocery, garbage and mail bags), with the exception of food bags with a thickness < 15 microns for composting, agricultural mulch and disposable plastic items for hotels,
      2. Oxo-degradable additives and plastics containing these additives,
      3. Plastic microbeads and products containing plastic microbeads, and
      4. Products marketed as disposable or intended for disposal (e.g., products with the words “waste,” “disposable,” or “garbage” in their name, or products intended for landfill or incineration).
    11. Packaging for any type of product that is contrary to the intent of the Cradle to Cradle principles and therefore not eligible for certification.
  2. Products for which program requirements have not been written, including:
    1. Food, beverages and other products intended to be ingested,
    2. Pharmaceuticals (see definition below), including products and substances for which claims of a pharmaceutical nature are made (e.g., creams to treat psoriasis or fungal infections),
    3. Pharmaceutical – A compound manufactured for use as a medicine. This includes any substance or combination of substances presented as having properties for the treatment or prevention of disease; or any substance or combination of substances that may be used in or administered to humans and/or animals, either to restore, correct or modify physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action, or to establish a medical diagnosis.
    4. Medical devices and products for which specialized biocompatibility testing is required and which are not included in the Cradle to Cradle certified materials health assessment methodology (e.g., a syringe, a pacemaker),
    5. Products that are or contain living multicellular organisms (e.g., live animals, plants, and seeds. Includes all algae, some of which are multicellular),
    6. Fuels and other products intended for combustion during use (e.g. candles, fireworks, explosives), and
    7. Buildings,
    8. Soil amendments (e.g., fertilizers, compost).
  3. Products that do not comply with applicable local and national laws and regulations.
